Kichwa Shimi Project
Many schools that we work with are bilingual institutions located in indigenous communities in the Imbabura province. In these stchools, students typically speak Kichwa at home as their first language, and Spanish in town, at the market, at the bank, etc.
After speaking with teachers and other community leaders, we have decided to begin a project, in conjunction with Kichwa Cultural Center Muyumi Kanki that will support teachers and students in their bilingual education journey.
This project will allow teachers an opportunity to receive professional development around mother tongue education, incorporating both Kichwa and Spanish into their classrooms, and even growing their Kichwa skills to better communicate with students and families and gain a deeper understanding of Kichwa culture.
